Vice President Kashim Shettima has assured of the Federal Government’s commitment to securing the safe return of schoolgirls abducted from Government Girls Secondary School, Maga, in Danko/Wasagu Local Government Area of Kebbi State, in the early hours of Monday, November 17.
Shettima, who visited Kebbi State on Wednesday, November 19, to meet families of the abducted schoolgirls on President Bola Tinubu’s directive, described the incident as a national tragedy.
He said, “Kebbi’s pain is Nigeria’s pain,” adding that President Tinubu is deeply concerned and remains committed to the rescue operations.
The vice president disclosed that all available state apparatus would be deployed to ensure the girls are returned unharmed.
Shettima said: “The president is deeply troubled by this tragedy. He shares your anguish, and he has sent me to assure you that this is not a moment for politics.
“This grief transcends party lines, geography and identity. This is a time for unity, for compassion and for firm resolve in the face of evil.
“Our priority is singular and unflinching: our daughters must return home safely. When girls in the safety of their classroom are seized by criminals, our collective conscience is assaulted.”
Shettima also pledged support for the family of the late vice principal, who reportedly lost his life defending the students.
He said: “We will honour and take care of the family. His sacrifice will not be in vain.
“This government will not relent. We will use every instrument of the state to bring these girls home and to ensure that the perpetrators of this wickedness face the full weight of justice.
“Kebbi, you are not alone. Nigeria stands with you. And we shall not rest until your daughters return to your warm embrace.”
Shettima also commended the efforts of the Nigerian military, police, Department of State Services (DSS), and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) for their frontline work in protecting citizens.
He acknowledged the contribution of the late Brigadier General, stating that his sacrifice will be remembered.
Shettima added: “We also honour the ultimate sacrifice made by some of our brave officers.
“To the family of the late Brigadier-General Musa Uba, we say: his sacrifice will never be forgotten.
“When a soldier gives his life in defence of this nation, a part of our collective soul is touched. We will honour him, his family, and all who pay the supreme price in service to Nigeria.”
Shettima also lauded Kebbi State Governor, Dr Nasir Idris, describing him as “a true son of the North” and commending his leadership in the area of security.
Governor Idris thanked Shettima and the President for their show of solidarity, saying he is confident of the Federal Government’s ability to address insecurity in the state.
