The Lagos State Police Command has unveiled extensive security arrangements to ensure a peaceful and orderly conduct of the Local Government Elections scheduled for Saturday, July 12, 2025.
Elections will be held across the state’s 20 Local Government Areas (LGAs) and 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs).
Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, disclosed in a statement on Wednesday that the Command, working in collaboration with other agencies under the Interagency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES), has put in place a comprehensive strategy to guarantee public safety before, during, and after the election.
As part of the security plan, the Command announced a total restriction of vehicular movement across Lagos State from 3:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on election day. The restriction applies to all roads and waterways within Lagos jurisdiction. Only vehicles involved in essential services – such as ambulances, fire trucks, and designated security patrols – will be allowed to operate during this period.
Accredited officials of the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC), election observers, and media personnel on official duty will be exempted from the restriction, provided they display valid LASIEC-issued identification tags. Anyone without such ID will be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the Electoral Act.
The police also announced a ban on the use of sirens, covered number plates, and the presence of armed escorts at polling units and collation centers. These measures aim to prevent intimidation and ensure neutrality during the voting process.
Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, urged Lagosians to cooperate with law enforcement officers and warned political thugs and troublemakers to stay away from polling centers. He also appealed to political parties to caution their supporters against any form of violence or lawlessness.
Parents and guardians were advised to dissuade their wards from acts of hooliganism. Residents were encouraged to report suspicious activities via the Command’s emergency lines: 08063299264 or 08065154338.
The Command reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives, property, and the integrity of the electoral process.
