Lagos Votes Today in High Stakes Local Council Polls
Lagos heads to the polls today as voters across the state’s 20 Local Government Areas and 37 Local Council Development Areas choose new chairmen and councillors, a grassroots contest widely viewed as a barometer of the ruling All Progressives Congress’s strength in its political heartland.
The Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) says voting will open at 8 a.m. in 13,325 polling units, with security personnel and materials already deployed. Retired justice Ayotunde Phillips, LASIEC chair, has promised a “free, fair and inclusive” exercise, adding that priority queues will serve the elderly, pregnant women and voters with disabilities.
Local government elections in Nigeria traditionally suffer low turnout and scant national coverage, yet this ballot carries extra weight. The APC, in power since 1999, is looking to re assert dominance after the Labour Party (LP) scored surprise wins in several Lagos polling units during the 2023 presidential race, notably in Amuwo Odofin, Eti Osa and Surulere. LP candidates have since mounted energetic—if uneven—campaigns and hope to turn protest votes into council seats.
The once formidable Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has been largely silent, hobbled by internal crises and dwindling grassroots presence.
Preparations were not without controversy. Opposition parties criticised LASIEC for releasing the final list of candidates only on 8 July – four days before the vote – and reported campaign poster vandalism and intimidation. An LP chairmanship hopeful in Amuwo Odofin alleged plans to disrupt polling, a claim security agencies say they are probing.
Governor Babajide Sanwo Olu urged residents to “turn out en masse,” reminding them that councils oversee markets, roads, primary schools and sanitation—the services citizens feel most directly.
Beyond determining who controls local budgets, today’s results will signal the political mood ahead of the 2027 general elections and, by extension, test the enduring influence of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the state he once dominated.
