It was the timely arrival of men of the Enugu State Police Command that saved a man from jungle justice after he allegedly killed his girlfriend and kept her body inside toilet in his apartment.

The man, Okpara Chibuike Emmanuel, aged 30 years, of Olympic Layout, One-Day, Enugu, was subsequently arrested in connection with the killing of the girlfriend, identified as Chinyere, whose surname, age and address are currently unknown.

It was gathered that police operatives attached to Awkunanaw Division rescued him on September 21 around 6:30 p.m. from the mob following information received by them that he had allegedly murdered his girlfriend.

According to preliminary investigation by the police, the man allegedly killed the lady on September 19, wrapped her body in a nylon and kept it inside the toilet of his apartment.

The odour of the decomposing body subsequently attracted neighbours, who forced the door open and apprehended him before the arrival of the police.

The body was subsequently removed and taken to a mortuary for preservation and autopsy, while efforts are ongoing to trace and notify her relatives.

During preliminary interrogation, the man was said to have disclosed that the death followed an argument between him and the lady over allegations of who infected the other with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV).

He further stated that during the argument, he struck the deceased on the head with a pestle, resulting in her death, and subsequently wrapped and kept her remains inside the toilet.

The Commissioner of Police in the state has ordered the State CID to conduct a discreet and thorough investigation to establish the circumstances of the incident and ensure the suspect is arraigned in court upon conclusion of investigations.
