A young man who used to threaten people through phone calls and extorted them of various amounts of money has been arrested by men of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).
The man, Adetokunbo Adeshina, aged 32 years, was arrested by operatives of the Kwara State command of the outfit after he threatened his last victim and demanded the sum of N500,000 from him.
The arrest also followed multiple complaints received by the command from victims who alleged that the man habitually placed threatening telephone calls, demanding money while warning that they would be attacked if they failed to comply.
The latest case that led to his arrest involved a complainant from whom he allegedly demanded ₦500,000, threatening to unleash violence on him, his family and his business.
Acting on the complaints, operatives launched an intelligence-driven investigation that led to the arrest of the man in Ibadan, Oyo State.
“Preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect allegedly sourced his victims’ telephone numbers through Facebook, after which he repeatedly contacted them with threats designed to instill fear and coerce them into making payments,” the command said in a statement on Friday, July 10.
Also, a search conducted during the operation led to the recovery of eight registered SIM cards of different telecommunications networks, believed to have been used in perpetrating the alleged criminal activities.
He was said to have given more useful information to the operatives while the command said investigations have been expanded to determine the full extent of the alleged extortion network.
He will also be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
