First Lady Melania Trump has issued a blistering legal threat to Hunter Biden, demanding more than $1 billion in damages over his claim that convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein introduced her to her husband, President Donald Trump.
The dispute erupted following Biden’s appearance in an interview with journalist Andrew Callaghan earlier this month, during which he alleged: “Epstein introduced Melania to Trump. The connections are, like, so wide and deep,” a statement he attributed to controversial author Michael Wolff.
In a formal letter sent on August 6 to Biden’s attorney, Abbe Lowell, Melania’s lawyer Alejandro Brito described the allegation as “false, defamatory and extremely salacious.” The letter contends that the widely circulated remark has caused “overwhelming financial and reputational harm” to the First Lady. Brito demanded that Biden publicly retract the statement and apologise by August 7 or face a lawsuit seeking damages in excess of $1 billion.
The Trumps have consistently maintained that the couple met in 1998 through modelling agent Paolo Zampolli at a New York Fashion Week party, not through Epstein. While Donald Trump and Epstein were acquaintances in the late 1990s, they reportedly fell out in the early 2000s. Epstein died in federal custody in 2019 under circumstances that fuelled persistent conspiracy theories.
In his letter, Brito also warned Biden against deleting or concealing evidence related to the statement, citing past instances where public figures and media outlets, including political strategist James Carville and The Daily Beast, issued retractions over similar claims.
Hunter Biden, however, has dismissed the threat outright. Speaking to The Times, he said: “F- that – that’s not going to happen. I don’t think these threats of lawsuits add up to anything other than a designed distraction.”
Legal experts note that, as a public figure, Melania Trump faces a high burden in any defamation case. She would need to prove not only that the statement was false but also that it was made with “actual malice” – meaning Biden knew it was false or acted with reckless disregard for the truth.
For now, the clash remains at the pre-litigation stage, but with tempers flaring on both sides, it could soon escalate into one of the most high-profile political-legal showdowns of the year.
