The National Civil Society Council of Nigeria (NCSCN) has called for a peaceful, out-of-court resolution to the ongoing legal dispute between Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan. The Council described the prolonged litigation as a needless distraction and a drain on national resources.

At a press conference in Abuja, the Council’s Executive Director, Ambassador Blessing Akinlosotu, urged restraint from all sides, cautioning against the politicisation of the matter. “This issue has been blown out of proportion, with everyone weighing in — often without the facts,” Akinlosotu said. “We’re not here to judge the merits of either side, but to appeal for calm and focus on national unity.”

He emphasized the need to avoid inflammatory comments that could prejudice ongoing court proceedings or mislead the public. The Council urged elder statesmen and civil society groups to act responsibly and not serve as instruments for political manipulation.

Reiterating its commitment to peace, NCSCN warned that civil society actors promoting unrest in the name of activism would face sanctions. It also appealed to the judiciary to remain impartial and ensure justice is based strictly on evidence and due process.
