Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has expressed deep appreciation to the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) for its decision to confer on him an honorary Doctor of Science degree (DSc, Honoris Causa).
The university’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Owunari Georgewill, made the announcement during a visit to Wike’s residence in Abuja, where he presented the official letter of conferment. The recognition comes as part of UNIPORT’s golden jubilee celebration.
Reacting in a Facebook post on Thursday, Wike described the honour as deeply personal, stating that UNIPORT had “given me everything.” He recalled studying political science at the institution before later pursuing a law degree.
“I thank the University Governing Council, led by Senator Mao Ohuabunwa, and the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Georgewill, for finding me worthy of this honour,” Wike said. “I accept it with joy on behalf of my family, wife, and friends.”
He pledged to attend the jubilee celebrations and reaffirmed his commitment to supporting the university. Wike, who also holds a law degree from Rivers State University and a Master’s from the same institution, was earlier honoured by the University of Calabar with a Doctor of Law in March 2025.
