The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) on Friday, August 14, said it has set up what it described as “a fact-finding committee” expected to investigate the country’s poor runs in major global football competitions.
The NFF said the probe panel will particularly focus on the Super Falcons’ failure to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup following its defeat by South Africa’s Bayana Bayana during the week.
The NFF named former U-17 team coach and ex-Secretary General of the NFF, Fanny Amun, as the chairman of the committee, while Ladan Bosso, Desire Oparanozie, Mutiu Adepoju and Dr Alex Mana would serve as members. Mr. Nasiru Jibril is also the secretary.
The committee is to investigate the setbacks and make recommendations to the country’s football governing body.
It will be recalled that the Super Falcons, 10-time Women’s AFCON champions and holders, were eliminated in the quarter-finals of the ongoing tournament in Morocco before losing 1-2 to South Africa in the playoff for a place in the Inter-Confederations Playoffs.
The failure means Nigeria will miss the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil, ending the Super Falcons’ ever-present record at the tournament since its inaugural edition in 1991.
In the case of the Super Eagles, the team did not even qualify for the 2026 World Cup held in USA, Canada and Mexico between June and July this year.
