In a bid to salvage the economy crisis lingering in the country, the Nigerian custom service, Oyo/Ogun district is to begin another re-distribution of seized foodstuffs to the Nigerian citizens as soon government finalizes process for the exercise.
According to the command, the modalities for the distribution of food items have to be completed to prevent a recurrence of what happened in Lagos where armed hoodlums dressed in camouflage wanted to force their way into the venue.
The Nigerian customs had earlier on yielded to the call of the government to distribute seized food items to citizens because of the economic hardship currently sweeping the country.
The Area Controller, Oyo/Osun, Ben Oramalugo, while speaking with newsmen at the command headquarters in Ibadan yesterday said that a sudden surge in the prices of food items and the non-availability of foodstuffs to citizens led to the directives by the Federal Government to distribute food items at a cheaper price to the public so as to ease the sufferings of people, and ensure they gain access to affordable food.
Ben noted that the distribution of the seized items would go a long way in addressing hardship faced by many families. He added that they are taking the directive very seriously, adding that fairness and transparency would be their watchword. Eligible beneficiaries will undergo screening before they receive food items.
In his statements, “Once the necessary modalities are in place, the distribution of seized rice will begin. We will provide regular updates to the public on the progress of the distribution”.
