A 45-year-old Nigerian national, Kenechi Ndukaife Atuchuku, has appeared before the Klerksdorp Magistrates’ Court in South Africa on charges of possession and dealing in drugs.

Atuchuku’s court appearance stems from a lengthy investigation by the Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation unit, conducted with guidance from the National Prosecuting Authority’s (NPA) Organised Crime Component.

Authorities said the suspect was implicated in an undercover operation in 2022, during which he was allegedly caught selling drugs to a customer. A warrant for his arrest was issued and executed in Klerksdorp on Friday, September 12, 2025.

Investigators also linked Atuchuku to a related case involving another Nigerian national, Michael Okoya, who was arrested last week for alleged drug dealing. Both men are expected to appear in the same court on Wednesday, September 17.

The North West acting head of the Hawks, Brigadier Georgia Moos, and the Director of Public Prosecutions in the province, Dr. Rachel Makhari, welcomed the arrest and court appearance, stressing that it highlights South Africa’s determination to clamp down on organised crime and drug trafficking.

Atuchuku has been remanded in custody until his next court date.
