Students across Nigeria are praising the Nigeria Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), describing it as one of the most impactful initiatives in the nation’s higher education system.
At a recent education expo in Lagos, undergraduates from various institutions recounted how the loan programme has.
Chiamaka Oshite, a Mass Communication student at the University of Cross River State, said the loan enabled her to buy textbooks and keep pace with her coursework. “It has really helped me to concentrate more on my studies,” she noted.
For Aisha Falalu, a Biology student at Umaru Musa Yar’adua University in Katsina, the scheme has reduced her dependence on her parents, who give her a N20,000 monthly allowance. “Now I can pay for my practicals, assignment printing, and transportation without disturbing them,” she said.
At the University of Ibadan, Pharmacy student Khadija Sonibare said the loan eased the strain on her family’s finances. “Now I can focus on my studies without always asking my dad for money,” she explained.
Similarly, Samuel Udeh, studying History and International Studies at the University of Uyo, said the programme is helping him work toward his dream of becoming a diplomat and launching a radio station.
NELFUND’s Managing Director and CEO, Mr. Akintunde Sawyerr, described the programme as a transformative policy championed by President Bola Tinubu to expand access to higher education. “It’s not just about giving money; it’s about reshaping the education system for the better,” Sawyerr said.
Education analyst Muda Ojo added that with the high cost of school fees and living expenses, many students struggle to cope. He praised NELFUND for covering both tuition and daily needs, with a simple online application process.
Since its launch on May 24, 2024, NELFUND has disbursed over N81 billion in loans to 396,252 students in 214 higher institutions across all 36 states and the FCT, as of August 7, 2025.
Beneficiaries say the initiative is not only easing their financial struggles but also empowering them to pursue their studies and ambitions with greater confidence.
