In order to ensure sanity on Abuja roads through more personnel and introduction of technology, the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) FCT Council, has called for more funding for the Directorate of Road Traffic Services (DRTS) in Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The call was made by the Chairman of council, Emmanuel Ogbeche, during a courtesy visit by the NUJ FCT Executive on the Director of the Directorate, Aliyu Wadata Bodinga.
Ogbeche had explained that the visit was meant to familiarize with the directorate and to seek areas of collaboration, especially in the area of information dissemination and awareness creation.
The NUJ FCT chairman noted that for effective safety road policing of the roads, the DRTS needs more personnel and introduction of technology to achieve the desired objective, and called the FCT administration to increase budgetary allocation to the directorate.
He also decried the issue of “One Chance Operators” saying that their activities are getting out of hand and called on the directorate to intensify effort in arresting the ugly development.
Welcoming the NUJ FCT executive, the DRTS boss informed the visitors of plans for Vehicle Inspection Officers (VIO) Mayors to complement the activities of regular officers and men.
Bodinga, represented by Assistant Director, Operations, Dele Yaro, assured that the directorate would continue to contribute to the safety of the residents on our roads explaining, that the FCT Motor Vehicle Administration is very efficient and has the capacity to provide every data of vehicles registered in the territory and track down stolen cars that came for registration.
He urged residents to always board painted taxi with side number for security reasons as your belongings would be traced in case of any eventuality.
According to him, the VIO will continue to emphasize on the restriction of articulated vehicles from 6am to 10am and 3:30pm to 10pm to reduce traffic and avoid untold hardship experienced by motorists and residents in areas of high traffic.
He expressed happiness at the visit and hoped that both institutions can collaborate in the area of information dissemination towards making FCT roads safer.
