Nigeria international Ola Aina has been named in WhoScored’s Premier League Team of the Week after his outstanding display in Nottingham Forest’s 3-1 victory over Brentford.
The 27-year-old right-back delivered a near-flawless performance, earning a 7.73 rating, the highest for defenders in his position during the opening weekend.
Aina was rock-solid defensively, completing seven clearances, winning eight of 15 duels, and making three key tackles. Impressively, he was never dribbled past throughout the 90 minutes, underlining his discipline in one-on-one situations.
On the ball, the Super Eagles star was just as effective. He registered 75 touches, completed 32 passes at 91 per cent accuracy, and attempted two dribbles, one successful, as he supported Forest’s attacking play with composure and intent.
Forest sealed the win with a commanding first-half display, as Chris Wood struck twice before Dan Ndoye added a third. Brentford’s Igor Thiago reduced the deficit from the penalty spot after the break, but Forest held firm, with Aina’s consistency at the back proving crucial.
Aina was joined in the Team of the Week by teammate Wood, who was rewarded for his clinical brace. Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya was selected for his heroics in the Gunners’ 1-0 win over Manchester United, while Virgil van Dijk, Daniel Ballard, and Gudmundsson completed the back line.
In midfield, Tottenham dominated with Mohammed Kudus, Richarlison, and Pape Matar Sarr, alongside Liverpool’s Cody Gakpo and Manchester City’s Nico González. Richarlison partnered Wood in attack.
Aina, who came close to joining Tottenham in the summer, will now look to replicate his superb form when Forest face Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on Sunday.
