The Catholic Diocese of Ondo and Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu, widow of late Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, have condemned the demolition of the Owo Memorial Park, built to honour victims of the June 5, 2022, church massacre.
Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa ordered the demolition after a request from the Olowo of Owo, citing cultural concerns.
Bishop Jude Arogundade described the act as a violation of the victims’ dignity and a blow to communal healing. Mrs. Akeredolu, in a Facebook video, accused the Olowo of hypocrisy and attempting to erase her husband’s legacy.
The move has sparked public outcry, with some supporting the decision on cultural grounds and others seeing it as politically motivated.
