More than 1,400 people are missing – including at least 870 foreigners – after catastrophic flooding hit Nepal-Tibet border villages on Wednesday. More than 170 people are confirmed dead, with search and rescue operations ongoing, the Cable News Network (CNN) reported on Thursday.
In Nepal, 826 people are missing, including almost 600 foreign tourists, according to police and tourism officials. Across the border in Tibet, Chinese state media reported that 580 people were missing in Tibet’s Gyirong County, including 260 foreign nationals.
At least 40 people from the United Kingdom are among those missing while rescuers continue to search for people.
Nearly 100 Chinese nationals were also discovered missing in Nepal in the area affected by the massive mudslide and flooding, China’s Foreign Ministry said on Thursday.
Several women could be seen wearing bandages while lying on hospital beds in Nepal’s capital, Kathmandu, many miles south from the scene of the devastation.
Other people could be seen photographing lists of those admitted to the hospital, trying to piece together who has so far been found.
More than 5,000 Nepalese army and police rescue personnel joined the rescue effort that retrieved 125 people on Thursday, including 20 foreigners, an army spokesperson said.
