The founder of the Living Faith Church Worldwide and Chancellor of Covenant University in Ota, Ogun State, Dr David Oyedepo, has emphasized the critical role that universities should play in grooming students with the skills and knowledge needed to address the pressing leadership challenges facing the country.
In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ota recently, Dr Oyedepo emphasized the importance of universities stepping up their efforts in preparing future leaders who can make meaningful contributions to solving societal problems.
The reputable septuagenarian suggested establishing Africa Leadership Development Centers at various universities across the country. These centers, he posited, could provide students with opportunities to learn and practice leadership skills, engage in experiential learning, and develop the qualities necessary for effective leadership in the African context.
He explained that Covenant University has launched online diploma and certificate courses in leadership. These courses, Dr Oyedepo explained, aim to equip students with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills necessary for effective leadership in various settings.
The Clergyman highlighted the success of Covenant University’s leadership programs, citing the institution’s recognition as the Nigerian university with the most employable graduates. He attributed this achievement to the university’s emphasis on leadership development, which he believes has resulted in students who are well-prepared to make meaningful contributions to their workplaces and communities.
He opined that leadership development studies would equip students with the leadership skills and competencies needed to provide innovative solutions to a wide range of societal problems.
He said, “Covenant is solving character problems among the young people in unmistakable terms.
“Also, the university was succeeding in positively remodeling the behaviour pattern of youths through the leadership development centre.”
Dr Oyedepo urged other universities across the country to emulate Covenant University’s approach by establishing their own Africa Leadership Development Centers, which can serve as hubs for innovation and problem-solving.
