Former governor of Ekiti State and a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mr Ayo Fayose, may have abandoned the candidate of the party in the state, Dr Wole Oluyede, as he openly campaigned for the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and current governor of the state, Biodun Oyebanji.
Fayose, on Wednesday joined many APC chieftains including Senate Leader, Opeyemi Bamidele; Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Honourable Adeoye Aribasoye, among others, to campaign for Oyebanji for the governorship election coming up on June 20.
At the campaign rally held in Ado Ekiti, the state capital, on Wednesday afternoon, Fayose described the governor as a performer and builder of modern Ekiti who deserved to be elected for a second term.
“I am not a member of the APC, you all know my party. But what is good has no other name. I want Oyebanji to remain in office till 2030. On behalf of all former governors, we remain with him and we want him to remain in office till 2030. We congratulate him in advance. God bless everyone,” Fayose stated.
Fayose’s endorsement of Oyebanji did not sit well with the leadership of the PDP in the state, just as indications emerged that the party is polarised into at least three factions, with each of them battling for the control of the structure of the party just about one month to the election.
Some of the party leaders described him as a traitor while others described him as a spoiler, promising to disappoint him by winning the election.
