Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has declared that Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, will never become Nigeria’s president.
Wike made the statement on Sunday during a thanksgiving service at St. James’ Anglican Church, Asokoro, Abuja, held in honour of President Bola Tinubu’s project commissioning activities in the FCT.
Speaking to the congregation, Wike said Obi’s political moment had passed, describing public support for him as driven by emotion rather than performance. He also criticized Obi’s tenure as governor of Anambra State, accusing him of failing to conduct local government elections throughout his eight-year administration.
“For eight years, Obi was a governor but he never conducted local government elections,” Wike said. “Only Obi was governor and chairman of all the local governments in Anambra State at the same time. The time has passed, he won’t have the opportunity again.”
Wike’s comments come days after Obi reaffirmed his readiness to serve a single presidential term under the terms of the emerging opposition coalition led by the African Democratic Congress (ADC), which aims to present a unified front ahead of future elections.
