The National Police Council has endorsed the appointment of Olatunji Disu as substantive Inspector-General of Police (IGP).
The council’s endorsement was announced by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, after its meeting at the State House, Abuja, on Monday, March 2.
The meeting, which lasted for about 40 minutes, was presided over by President Bola Tinubu and began at about 2:15 p.m.
The Police Council is chaired by the president and comprises all 36 state governors, the chairman of the Police Service Commission and the Inspector-General of Police.
Recall that in its statement announcing the resignation of former IGP, Kayode Egbetokun, on Tuesday, February 24, the Presidency hinted that the council would be convened soon.
“In compliance with the provisions of the Police Act 2020, President Tinubu will convene a meeting of the Nigeria Police Council shortly to formally consider the appointment of AIG Disu as substantive Inspector-General of Police, after which his name will be transmitted to the Senate for confirmation,” Onanuga said in the statement.
Also in attendance at the council meeting were Vice President Kashim Shettima; Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume; National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu; Head of Civil Service, Didi Walson-Jack; governors of Enugu, Nasarawa, Ogun, Kwara, Plateau, Ondo, and Lagos states; and the Deputy Governor of Kogi State.
Ministers of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Police Affairs, and Interior also attended the council meeting.
The new police IGP, Disu, has been serving in an acting capacity since his appointment on Wednesday, February 25, following Egbetokun’s resignation.
Shortly after his decoration with his new rank last Wednesday, Disu vowed to enforce zero tolerance for corruption and human rights abuses during his tenure.
The new IGP outlined his priorities and declared that the era of impunity in the Nigeria Police Force is over.
