The Lagos State government has reiterated its stance on ensuring the state remains safe, clean, and orderly with the arrest of 15 street beggars on Friday, November 14, during enforcement operations at Ikosi Ketu and Mile 12.
This was disclosed by the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources in the state, Tokunbo Wahab, in a post shared on his official X handle.
Wahab said the operation is part of the government’s continuous efforts to uphold public order and preserve public spaces from abuse.
He added that the ministry will continue to enforce the law while collaborating with social welfare agencies to provide rehabilitation where necessary.
The commissioner said, “Fifteen street beggars were apprehended this morning during our enforcement operations at Ikosi Ketu and Mile 12.
“This is part of our ongoing effort to maintain order, ensure safety, and protect public spaces from misuse.
We will continue to enforce the law while working with the appropriate social welfare agencies to ensure rehabilitation where necessary.
“Lagos must remain safe, clean, and orderly for all who live and work here. Our resolve remains firm.”
The operation follows a recent enforcement initiative aimed at protecting public spaces and curbing the menace of street begging.
In reaction to Wahab’s tweet, some Lagos residents commended the action, noting that it will help sanitise the city.
Others also questioned the next steps following the arrest and what plans the government has for citizens’ welfare to alleviate poverty.

@iamAbode wrote: “Where are the apprehended individuals being kept, and is there a plan to sustain them, or will they be sent back to their home states? It’s important to ensure their welfare while addressing the issue. I hope the government also follows through with proper rehabilitation and support for those who genuinely need help, not just enforcement.”
@BoxingF82 tweeted: “I don’t have any issue with picking them. But where are you taking them to? What are they eating there? Remember they are Nigerians not illegals. Which work or home did you provide for them? Show workings; it’s not about punishing people. Nigerians are fond of punishing each other.”
