Three health workers have been confirmed dead in a lone accident they were involved in while returning from May Day rally to their destination in Kwara State.
The accident occurred along the Oke-Onigbin-Omu-Aran road a few hours after the rally was held on Friday. May Day is celebrated on May 1 every year.
It was gathered that the victims were members of the Medical and Health Workers’ Union of Nigeria (MHWUN) of Ekiti Local Government area of the state.
Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Kwara State Command, Kabir Kazeem, who confirmed the accident in a statement on Saturday, May 2, said it occurred around 3:00 p.m. on Friday when they were returning to their local government from Ilorin.
According to the statement: “A commercial Mazda bus, with registration number ARP627KY was on May 1 involved in a lone accident due to excessive speeding.
“Seven people were involved in the accident comprising three males and four females, but unfortunately, three females died immediately,” he said.
Kazeem noted that FRSC officers rushed to the scene and took the injured passengers and the dead to the nearest hospital in Omu-Aran.
According to the FRSC, available reports indicated that the driver lost control when one of the tyres of the bus burst on speed, consequently causing the accident.
Also speaking on the accident on Saturday, the Chairman of Ekiti Local Government Area of the state, Mr Awelewa Gabriel, described it as a painful blow to the council, the health sector, and the state as a whole.
“Our hearts are heavy. These were dedicated professionals who left their homes to celebrate the dignity of labour, only to meet this unfortunate fate on their way back.
“We have lost patriots who served our communities with compassion and commitment,” he said.
