Portugal clinched their second UEFA Nations League title in dramatic fashion on Sunday, June 8, 2025, edging Spain 5-3 on penalties after a pulsating 2-2 draw at Munich’s Allianz Arena.
The victory adds to Portugal’s 2019 Nations League triumph and their historic Euro 2016 win — but it was 40-year-old Cristiano Ronaldo who stole the spotlight once again.
In front of a crowd of 65,852, Spain struck first through 17-year-old prodigy Lamine Yamal. Portugal responded before halftime, with Francisco Conceição calmly finishing to level the score. Spain regained the lead in the second half after Dani Carvajal converted a penalty following a foul inside the box. But the defining moment came in the 61st minute when Ronaldo volleyed home Portugal’s second — his 138th international goal — becoming the first player over 40 to score in a Nations League final.
With the match still tied after 90 minutes, penalties followed. Portugal converted all five of their spot-kicks with surgical precision, while Spain faltered as Álvaro Morata missed their third attempt. The shootout ended 5-3, sending the Portuguese bench into rapturous celebrations.
Though Ronaldo was forced off in the 88th minute due to injury, his contribution was monumental. “Winning for Portugal is always special. It’s tears. It’s duty done and a lot of joy,” he said after the match, visibly emotional.
Teammates and coaches hailed his leadership and influence. Manager Roberto Martinez called him “irreplaceable,” while defender Nuno Mendes praised his role as “a mentor and a fighter.”
