Russia has claimed fresh battlefield victories in Ukraine, announcing the capture of the settlement of Novokhatske in the eastern Donetsk region. According to a statement from the Russian Ministry of Defence, its forces also inflicted defeats on Ukrainian troops in the northern regions of Sumy and Kharkiv, as well as in the southern Mykolaiv region.
These latest advances come amid a new escalation in fighting, despite recent efforts by U.S. President Donald Trump to broker peace between Moscow and Kyiv.
In a dramatic shift in tone, Trump recently issued a 50-day ultimatum to the Kremlin, warning that failure to agree to a peace settlement would result in expanded economic sanctions. Among the most significant proposed measures is a secondary tariff targeting countries that continue to trade with Russia, a move designed to further isolate Moscow from global markets.
At the same time, Trump announced that the U.S. would send additional Patriot air defense systems and other “sophisticated” weaponry to Ukraine. Notably, he said the cost of these arms would be covered by NATO allies in Europe, signaling a tougher stance and a renewed push for transatlantic burden-sharing.
Despite Trump’s overtures, Russia has continued its campaign of missile and drone strikes across Ukraine and intensified its eastern offensive. These developments have reportedly frustrated Trump, who has privately expressed feeling misled by Russian President Vladimir Putin following their recent conversations. Putin, for his part, has conveyed a willingness to pursue peace but reiterated his intention to achieve Russia’s military objectives in Ukraine.
In the latest development, Ukrainian officials reported a massive overnight drone and missile attack on Kharkiv and Dnipro, resulting in casualties and widespread infrastructure damage. Ukraine’s air defenses intercepted several threats, but local authorities say residential buildings and energy facilities were hit.
The renewed Russian push and the mounting U.S. pressure suggest a hardening of positions on both sides, complicating any prospects for a negotiated settlement. With Trump’s deadline ticking and the conflict intensifying, the war in Ukraine appears poised to enter an even more volatile phase.
