Former Super Eagles goalkeeper, Ike Shorunmu, has urged the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to prioritise the development of fast-rising shot-stopper, Ebenezer Ifeanyi Harcourt, following his historic rise to the senior national team.
Harcourt, a product of Sporting Lagos Academy, recently became the youngest player to feature for Nigeria’s senior side. Born in 2009, the 15-year-old marked his debut with a clean sheet in the Super Eagles B team’s 2-0 win over Congo at the ongoing CHAN 2024 tournament.
The teenager had earlier shone at the CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations, where he helped Nigeria clinch bronze and qualify for the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup. He kept three clean sheets in the competition and conceded just two goals in regulation time, including match-winning saves in a penalty shootout against Senegal.
Speaking to Soccernet.ng, Shorunmu praised the youngster’s talent but emphasised the need for proper mentorship.
“I think they need to encourage him more by inviting him regularly to the national team to learn from his senior colleagues,” the former Super Eagles keeper said.
Harcourt, son of a former goalkeeper and current Enyimba goalkeeper trainer, has been lauded for his maturity, composure, and agility far beyond his age. Analysts believe he could become Nigeria’s long-term solution in goal, a position that has lacked stability since the retirements of Vincent Enyeama and Austin Ejide.
Shorunmu’s advice comes as calls grow for the NFF to create a clear pathway for Harcourt’s development. With international scouts reportedly monitoring him, many warn that Nigeria must secure his future early and ensure he remains committed to the Super Eagles project.
