President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has outlined the potential benefits of Nigeria’s participation in the ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9), currently taking place in Yokohama, Japan.
Tinubu, who arrived in Tokyo earlier in the week, joined other African heads of government and global leaders at the opening ceremony of the three-day summit, which is being held at the Pacifico Yokohama International Conference Centre from August 20 to 22.
This year’s conference focuses on Africa’s economic transformation, private sector investment, and innovation. It provides a platform for African countries to deepen cooperation with Japan and other global partners in pursuit of sustainable development.
In a statement released through his official social media handles, President Tinubu said Nigeria’s engagement at TICAD9 was anchored on unlocking more than $1 billion in trade and investment. He stressed that the government was focused on driving green innovation, stimulating industrial growth, and expanding opportunities for young Nigerians.
“The summit provides a launchpad for lasting development and global partnerships, anchored on technology, talent, and trust,” the President said, noting that Nigeria intends to position itself as the gateway to West Africa’s vast market.
Tinubu added that Nigeria’s active participation in the conference would not only consolidate its leadership role on the continent but also reinforce partnerships with Japan and other development stakeholders across the globe.
Observers note that Nigeria’s presence at TICAD9 underscores its commitment to attracting private investment and fostering collaboration in critical sectors such as energy transition, digital innovation, and industrial expansion.
The TICAD initiative, launched in 1993, has become one of the key frameworks for Africa’s engagement with Japan. Over the years, it has facilitated dialogue on economic growth, peace, and development, while also unlocking investment commitments for African states.
With Nigeria’s strong delegation at the summit, expectations are high that agreements reached in Yokohama will translate into tangible projects that can accelerate the country’s economic recovery and create new pathways for sustainable growth.
