Men of the Nigerian Army have foiled an attempt by a mob to attack and burn down a police station in Katsina State over a bandit detained at the station.
The soldiers from 17 Brigade in Katsina city foiled the plan to attack the police station in Dan Musa after the mob requested for the bandit who they wanted to lynch.
The incident occurred around 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, April 5, when the residents were told that one of the bandits that invaded their community had been arrested by the police and detained at the station.
A source in the state told Impact Nigeria News Online on Tuesday afternoon that on hearing about the detention of the bandit, the mob headed to the station and demanded for the bandit in order to lynch him.
However, as they were about to set the station on fire, soldiers from Combat Team 1 of the Brigade got a distress call from the station, raced to the scene and foiled the attempt by the mob.
The soldiers dispersed the mob, restored calm and prevented what could have escalated into a major destruction.
In another development, on Tuesday morning, vigilantes in Mashegu Local Government Area of Niger State ambushed bandits who abducted residents from Alala and Ganawa villages on Monday night while they were taking them away.
According to sources, the vigilantes intercepted the attackers along their escape route, leading to a gun battle. During the encounter, two bandits were killed and the kidnapped victims rescued.
