Popular activist, Omoyele Sowore, on Monday morning ran for his dear life when policemen threw canisters of teargas at those who converged on the Federal Capital Territory to protest the continued detention of the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.
As early as 6:00 a.m., security men, including men of the Nigerian Army, the Nigeria Police Force, among others, barricaded the road that led to the Presidential Villa, Aso Rock and other important buildings in the city.
However, Sowore and other protesters arrived the venue of the take-off of the protest around 7:00 a.m., chanting anti-government songs.
However, when the situation became unruly, police officers at the protest venue threw canisters of teargas at the protesters, making them and other onlookers to become uncomfortable.
However, a viral video at the scene showed Sowore abandoning the protesters and running in another direction while shouting that the police wanted to kill the protesters.
Before the launch of the teargas, Sowore and other protesters were seen shouting “Free Nnamdi Kanu now, teargas cannot stop us.”
The protest caused traffic bottleneck around the Julius Berger area of the city.
Sowore later alleged in a post on his X handle the police team deployed to the protest scene have arrested Nnamdi Kanu’s brother, his lawyer as well as innocent bystanders, adding that they were beaten and taken to the FCT command.
