The Oyo State Police Command on Saturday, October 3, said it had arrested three members of an armed robbery gang responsible for a deadly robbery attack at Wofun Olodo area of Ibadan, the state capital.
During the robbery attack in August this year, the 44-year-old wife of the landlord was killed while other tenants sustained serious injuries.
The incident occurred on August 4 around 2:30 a.m. when the robbers attacked the residence of the landlord, Alhaji Muiz Olatokunbo and in the course of the attack, they killed the wife, Mrs. Wahab Rukayat, and injured other tenants.
The robbers also carted away several mobile phones, wristwatches, $400 and other valuables said to worth ₦3.493 million.
Following the report of the incident, the matter was transferred to the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) of the command for further investigation and the apprehension of those responsible.
Through sustained intelligence gathering and the strategic leverage of technology, operatives developed credible leads which culminated in a targeted operation.
Consequently, on October 2 around 9:00 p.m., while acting on credible intelligence, the operatives were led to a suspected criminal hideout in the Sabo area of Ibadan where three men were arrested.
Their names were given as Akinrinola Oluwatobi, aged 28 years; Okunola Mathew, aged 24 years and Ibrahim Rabiu, aged 23 years.
After their arrest and as part of the preliminary investigation, an identification parade was conducted during which the victims of the attack identified them as some of those that attacked them at the building.
The arrested men were also said to have confessed their involvement and various roles played in the robbery operation, stating that they participated in the attack, carted away valuables worth approximately ₦3.493 million and killed the landlord’s wife in the course of the operation.
They further confessed to their involvement in several other robbery incidents perpetrated around the Wofun Olodo and Akobo areas of Ibadan, providing additional leads to the investigation.
They are expected to be charged to court at the conclusion of the investigation.
