President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was on Wednesday accorded a ceremonial welcome at Windsor Castle, marking the formal start of his state visit to the United Kingdom.
The Nigerian leader, accompanied by First Lady Oluremi Tinubu, inspected a guard of honour alongside Charles III in a symbolic display of diplomatic ties between both nations.
Earlier, the President and his wife were received by Prince William and Catherine, Princess of Wales at the Fairmont Hotel before proceeding to Windsor Castle for the official ceremonies.
The visit featured an exchange of gifts between both sides, as well as a private viewing of artefacts related to Nigeria from the Royal Collection, underscoring the long-standing cultural connections between the two countries.
A state banquet is scheduled to follow, where President Tinubu and King Charles III are expected to deliver speeches before an audience of political leaders, diplomats and prominent figures.
As part of the itinerary, the President and the First Lady will also lay a wreath at the tomb of Elizabeth II at St George’s Chapel.
They are also expected to engage with organisations involved in interfaith dialogue, reflecting a broader agenda that includes cultural and religious cooperation.
On Thursday, President Tinubu is scheduled to hold talks with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and meet members of the Nigerian diaspora community in the UK. The British monarch had earlier hosted members of the Nigerian community at St James’s Palace.
The visit is seen as an opportunity for both countries to deepen collaboration in key areas, including trade, security and governance, ahead of Nigeria’s next presidential election cycle.
In a parallel engagement, the First Lady, a pastor, is expected to preach at Lambeth Palace and meet representatives of the Church of England.
Nigeria and the UK have maintained strong diplomatic and economic ties, bolstered by a strategic partnership agreement signed in November 2024 to enhance cooperation in economic development, migration and security.
Several Nigerian banks also operate subsidiaries in the UK, further highlighting the depth of economic relations between both countries.
