What should have been a day of celebration turned tragic on June 21, 2025, when a barrier collapse at Algiers’ 5 July 1962 Stadium left three fans dead and over 70 injured. The incident occurred during post-match celebrations following MC Alger’s 1–0 win over NC Magra, securing the club’s second consecutive league title.
The collapse took place in the upper stands as a metal barrier gave way under crowd pressure, causing supporters to fall into lower tiers. Among the deceased was Younes Amguzzi, a well-known fan. Dozens of injured spectators were treated at three major hospitals for fractures and head trauma.
MC Alger players visited victims and donated blood, postponing their trophy presentation in mourning. President Abdelmadjid Tebboune extended condolences, but stadium authorities and the Sports Ministry have yet to comment on safety protocols or launch an investigation.
The disaster has sparked public outrage and calls for improved stadium infrastructure and crowd control. Critics cite poor oversight in high-capacity venues and warn of further tragedies if reforms aren’t made.
MC Alger’s triumph, now overshadowed by loss, stands as a painful reminder that fan safety must never be compromised in the pursuit of sporting glory.
