Troops of the Nigerian Army have foiled a massive pre-dawn attack on Chibok community in Borno State by more than 300 terrorists, repelling them from destruction and killings in the town where over 250 girls were abducted a few years ago.
A credible military source told the Impact News Nigeria Online that the heavily-armed terrorists stormed Chibok around 2:50 a.m. on Saturday from what the source describes as ‘multiple directions.’
The source however said on getting the report about their invasion, troops of the 28 Task Force Brigade, backed by ambush teams and observation posts on surrounding mountains, launched a counter offensive and engaged them in a gun battle that was said to have lasted for two hours.
According to the source, the fierce firefight carried out by the troops forced the terrorists to abandon the fight and subsequently began fleeing towards the Azir axis in the area around 4:00 a.m.
The sources said the 25 Brigade was immediately tasked to mount ambush positions ahead of the Azir Bridge to intercept the fleeing insurgents, with movements guided by a Nigerian Army Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV).
Although the terrorists scattered into several directions on sensing the approach, troops successfully disrupted their escape and no soldier or equipment was lost in the encounter, the source added.
