The United States Mission in Nigeria has announced the temporary closure of its Embassy in Abuja and Consulate General in Lagos in observance of Juneteenth National Independence Day.

According to a notice posted on the mission’s official X account on Thursday, both diplomatic offices will suspend operations on Friday, June 19, 2026, as part of the U.S. federal holiday observance.

“The U.S. Embassy in Abuja and Consulate General in Lagos will be closed on Friday, June 19, 2026, in observance of Juneteenth National Independence Day,” the statement read.

The temporary closure means routine consular services, including visa interviews, passport processing, and other non-emergency appointments, will not be available during the holiday period. Normal operations are expected to resume after the observance.

Juneteenth is a significant date in American history, marking the end of slavery in the United States. The annual commemoration traces its origins to June 19, 1865, when Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, and informed enslaved African Americans that they were free—more than two years after the issuance of the Emancipation Proclamation by President Abraham Lincoln.

The observance gained federal recognition in 2021 after legislation establishing Juneteenth as a national holiday was signed into law by then-President Joe Biden.

Since becoming a federal holiday, Juneteenth has been observed by U.S. government institutions worldwide, including embassies and consulates, which close in recognition of the historic occasion.
