The United States has reported Nigeria to the United Nations Security Council over what it described as “Christian genocide,” telling the world body that Washington is planning to take action on the matter.
It will be recalled that President Donald Trump expressed his anger over what he described as attacks on Christians in Nigeria, warning that he may take military action on terrorists targets in the country.
However, on Thursday, the US Ambassador to the UN, Mike Waltz, reported the situation in Nigeria to the Security Council during council’s session on West Africa.
The US is one of the permanent members of the UN Security Council that have veto powers.
According to Ambassador Waltz, the US has continued to tell the world that violence against Christians in Nigeria is unacceptable, and the US under President Trump’s leadership is demanding the Nigerian government to do more to protect its people from these atrocities.
He said: “The United States is concerned and outraged by the ongoing slaughter of thousands of Christians in Nigeria by various ethnic militias in the Middle Belt as well as terrorists like Boko Haram and ISIS West Africa in the North. It is tragic and unacceptable.
“Churches are being burnt, villages are being razed, thousands are killed, clergies murdered simply for wearing cross, for being Christians and for daring to say they worship Jesus Christ.
“Just yesterday, 25 young girls were kidnapped from their school and one school official murdered trying to protect them in Kebbi State.
“These are happening, they are undeniable and unacceptable. The United States condemns these attacks in the strongest term and demands accountability from the Nigerian government.”
