The House of Representatives primary election of the All Progressives Congress (APC) turned violent on Saturday afternoon at the venue of the election in Mushin area of Lagos State, as voters fled in different directions for their dear lives.
The violence erupted before the commencement of voting for the party’s primary for Mushin Constituency II following the invasion of the venue by suspected political thugs.
As of the time of this report on Saturday evening, the exercise was yet to begin, while tension enveloped the venue of the exercise.
The violence, according to sources at the venue of the exercise, erupted following disagreements among supporters of some of the aspirants.
This led to a stampede as delegates and party faithful took to their heels when the suspected thugs arrived, brandishing various offensive weapons,
Among the leading aspirants contesting for the ticket of the party in the constituency were: Honourable Seye Oladejo and the incumbent lawmaker, Honourable Oluwatoyin Fayinka, seeking re-election.
Some party members who witnessed the violence expressed concern, urging party leaders and security agencies to ensure a peaceful and transparent process.
Party officials had not issued an official statement on the incident as of the time of this report on whether the exercise would still be held before the end of Saturday.
