The Vice Presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 general election, Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, has said it would be better for Peter Obi to return to the party on which they jointly contested the 2023 presidential election than pursue what he described as “another type of agenda.”
Baba-Ahmed stated this during an interview with Channels Television on Friday, January 9.
He added that Obi would be received back into the party if he fails to clinch the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential ticket for the 2027 election.
“I also said if Peter Obi does not get the ticket there in ADC, he is more than welcome back to the Labour Party.
“I will stand there, and nobody will do anything bad to Peter Obi. It is better for him to come back than for him to do another type of agenda,” he said.
The former vice presidential candidate’s comment comes days after Obi joined ADC, an opposition coalition, nearly three years after both men ran on a joint ticket under the LP in the last presidential election.
Baba-Ahmed also dismissed reports suggesting he had declared an intention to contest the presidency, adding that he only reiterated his membership of the party.
He said, “I never declared to contest the presidency even though there could be a possibility of that happening. I certainly did not declare for the presidency. I simply reiterated my membership of the Labour Party.
“That is all. And in the submissions I made, I clearly stated that one will have to wait for the INEC timetable and for the party to make the call for people to indicate their interest.”
