A wife has been arrested alongside her two accomplices by men of the Edo State Police Command after she planned her own kidnap and collected the sum of N5 million as ransom from her husband.
The state police command announced the arrest on Monday night, saying its operatives attached to New Etete Division, Benin City, arrested the wife, Chioma Success Adaniken, a few days after the kidnap was organised.
It was gathered that her husband, Paul Adaniken, reported at New Etete Police Division that he left his wife and their three-year-old son at home before proceeding to his shop.
However, later in the day around noon, he received a phone call from an unknown number informing him that his wife and son had been kidnapped, with the abductors demanding a ransom of N5 million for their release.
After receiving the report, detectives commenced investigations while the command’s Anti-Kidnapping Unit launched a full-scale cyber analysis and the intelligence-led operations that yielded a major breakthrough.
The investigation revealed that the wife’s cousin, Osita Godfrey, who was earlier assisting the detectives with information, was arrested and found to be an accomplice in the crime.
His confessional statement was said to have led to the arrest of the woman while another man, Martins Chidozie, was also arrested in connection with the crime.
During her interrogation, the wife was said to have told the detectives that she decided to organise her own kidnap because she needed the money to start a business.
The three of them were said to have made useful information to the police while the N5 million collected as ransom has been recovered.
The case has also been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation after which they are expected to be charged to court
