President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday evening decorated Assistant Inspector-General of Police Tunji Disu with the new rank of the Inspector General of Police at the State House, Abuja.

Disu will however perform the role in acting capacity until he is cleared by the Senate.

The decoration ceremony, which took place at the president’s office around 4:30 p.m., was attended by the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu; Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila; Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume and the outgoing IGP, Kayode Egbetokun.

President Tinubu, who pinned the new rank on Disu’s uniform, commended the outgoing IGP Egbetokun for his service to the nation.

At the ceremony, Tinubu promised Disu his full support.

“I made this decision for you to assume this responsibility. I know your record. I saw the dedication you exhibited while you were in Lagos when I was governor.

“Lead firmly but fairly, demand professionalism at every level and ensure that the safety of lives and property remains our highest priority. It’s a daunting challenge. I know you can do it. You have my word, you have my full support.”

The ceremony came barely 24 hours after Egbetokun submitted his resignation letter to the president on Tuesday, citing family issues that require his undivided attention.
