Thirty two citizens of Nigeria have been arrested in Ghana in a joint cybercrime operation after they were found to have engaged in romance scam and used the opportunity to swindle many people, especially foreigners.
Ghana’s Minister of Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation, Mr Samuel Nartey George. announced the arrest on his X handle, saying they were picked up during a dawn raid on Saturday, December 13, in Kasoa Tuba, Central Region, by the Cyber Security Authority of the country.
In the post, the minister said the government in Ghana will continue to support efforts to make the country unattractive to cybercriminals.
The minister wrote: “Kudos to the team at the Cyber Security Authority Ghana once again.
“This dawn, another massive blow has been struck against cybercrime in Ghana. A joint operation between the Authority and National Security resulted in the arrest of 32 Nigerians operating a romance scam syndicate in Kasoa Tuba.
“We will continue to support the Authority in its efforts to do more as we make Ghana an unattractive destination for cybercrimes.”
Also, according to the Cyber Security Authority, the joint operation resulted in the seizure of 31 laptops and 15 mobile phones suspected to be linked to cybercrime activities.
It added that the Nigerians are currently in custody to assist with ongoing investigations, while the seized devices are undergoing forensic analysis.
“This operation forms part of the Authority’s sustained efforts to combat cybercrime and related offences nationwide. The CSA remains committed to safeguarding Ghana’s digital space in close collaboration with its security partners,” it said.
