At least five people have died and 10 others sustained injuries in a lone-vehicle accident on Thursday along the Iyana Egbado axis of the Abeokuta–Lagos Expressway.
The crash, which occurred around 11:12 a.m., involved a white Mazda E2000 bus with registration number KRD809XC conveying 20 passengers, including adults and children.
According to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Ogun State Command, the vehicle was carrying six adult men, 11 adult women, one male child, and two female children at the time of the incident.
FRSC spokesperson, Odunsi Afolabi, said rescue teams arrived at the scene within minutes of receiving distress calls, but several victims had already been trapped and injured.
He confirmed that five passengers died on the spot — including one adult male, two adult females, one male child, and one female child — while 10 others suffered varying degrees of injuries. Five passengers reportedly escaped without harm.
Emergency responders from the RS2.28 Itori Unit Command evacuated the injured victims to General Hospital, Ifo, and Oreofe Specialist Hospital, Itori, where they are currently receiving treatment. The bodies of the deceased were deposited at the General Hospital morgue in Ifo.
Preliminary findings by the FRSC attributed the crash to excessive speed and overloading, noting that the road condition was good and weather at the time was cloudy.
Officials said the driver likely lost control due to reckless driving, leading to the fatal crash.
Reacting to the tragedy, Ogun State Sector Commander of the FRSC, Corps Commander Oludare Ogunjobi, expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and urged motorists to exercise caution.
He warned drivers against speeding, overloading, and other traffic violations, especially during the festive season, stressing that road safety must be taken seriously by all road users.
The FRSC reiterated its call for strict compliance with traffic regulations to prevent avoidable loss of lives on Nigerian highways.
