A final-year student of the Bayero University, Kano (BUK), Maryam Isah Shehu, is currently in trouble as she was on Thursday arraigned before Justice Joyce Abdulmalik of the Federal High Court, Abuja on charges brought by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over a social media post.

She was said to have made a post on the social media platform, Instagram, accusing a zonal director of the agency of collecting the sum of N20 million bribe to coordinate an assault on an individual.

She was arrested in Kano and taken to Abuja where she was said to have spent about a month in EFCC custody before she was brought to court.

The commission told the court that the post was intended to damage its reputation and charged her under Section 24(2)(c) of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, Etc) Act, 2015, as amended in 2024.

The judge remanded her in Suleja Correctional Centre and adjourned the case till August 31.

However, shortly after the case was adjourned, the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) said it had waded into the matter and had reached out to the leadership of the anti graft agency to seek a resolution that will lead to the discontinuation of the case.

NANS said it decided to wade in because her examinations are expected to begin next Monday, adding that it was concerned about the impact of the ongoing situation on her academic progress and future.

“We are engaging the relevant authorities responsibly and constructively, with the hope of finding a favourable resolution,” NANS said in a statement on Friday.
