Of the 6,753 cases of gender based violence recorded in the past three years in Lagos State, 540 of them involved beating up of men by their wives which indicates an increase in such an unusual development.
This was disclosed by the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation in the state, Mrs Bolaji Dada, during a press briefing on the third year administration of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu held on Monday, June 1.
According to her, within the one year under review, 540 men reported cases of domestic violence from their wives at the ministry and some of them were eventually resolved by the officials of the ministry.
She however said more cases of gender based violence were reported by women as 6,313 cases were brought by them to the ministry in three years.
She further revealed that justice was secured in the last three years in 2,460 reported cases, comprising 2,263 women and 197 men, through the ministry’s intervention and collaboration with relevant stakeholders.
She also stated that the ministry has been able to empower over 18,000 women in the last three years, among whom were those who reported cases of gender based violence at the ministry
She added that 1,485 women received training in agriculture and farming in Badagry as part of efforts to enhance food security, boost incomes and promote economic independence among women.
According to her, the interventions executed during the review period were inclusive, impact-driven and community-focused, ensuring that women, widows, persons living with disabilities, young adults and disadvantaged residents have access to opportunities that improve their quality of life.
