Authorities of the Ijebu Ode Local Government Area of Ogun State have suspended the operations of commercial tricycles in the town until further notice.

The suspension, according to the Chairman of the local government, Mr Dare Alebiosu, came following recent developments and reports of disorderly conduct, congestion and breaches of public safety regulations involving he riders of the tricycle, popularly known as Keke Marwa, in various garages across the local government.

The local government added that the action was taken in the overall interest of public order, traffic control, and the need to restore sanity and proper coordination of commercial transport operations within the local government area.

“All relevant unions and garage executives are to ensure strict compliance with this directive. Any individual or group found violating this instruction will be sanctioned in accordance with existing local government laws and transport regulations,” the statement added.

The local government stated that it had instructed security agencies and the local government task force to strictly enforce enforce this suspension with immediate effect.

“While we understand the temporary inconvenience this may cause, the measure is necessary to restructure the system for better organisation and safety. Further communication will be issued after a comprehensive review,” the local government added.

Some residents of the town expressed concern over the suspension as they said the tricycles are the easiest and cheapest means of transportation for them. They said the Marwa operators used to take them to their destination in the inner and remotest parts of the town.
