The Adamawa State Police Command has arrested two suspected masterminds accused of operating a scheme that allegedly defrauded customers through the sale of dummy phones disguised as original devices.
The suspects, identified as Audu Abubakar and Nasiru Hassan, both residents of Bauchi Street in Yola North Local Government Area of the state, were apprehended following complaints from victims who discovered that the phones they purchased were non-functional replicas.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, the command’s spokesperson, SP Suleiman Nguroje, said the suspects were arrested by operatives of the command during an investigation into the alleged fraud.
“Operatives of the Adamawa State Police Command have arrested two suspects for allegedly defrauding unsuspecting customers by selling them dummy phones instead of original working devices,” Nguroje stated.
He disclosed that several dummy phones and other items suspected to be connected to the alleged crime were recovered from the suspects.
The police spokesperson added that the Commissioner of Police in Adamawa State, CP Kabiru Hassan, had ordered a comprehensive investigation into the matter, with plans to prosecute the suspects in court after the conclusion of investigations.
The command advised members of the public to exercise caution when purchasing electronic devices, urging customers to patronise accredited phone dealers and verify the authenticity of products before making payments.
“Customers are advised to test devices thoroughly and demand receipts before making payment,” the statement added.
The police further encouraged residents to report suspicious activities to the relevant authorities as part of efforts to curb fraudulent practices in the state.
