Aisha Yesufu, an activist and an ally of former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, has withdrawn from the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) senatorial race for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Yesufu disclosed this in a statement issued on Friday, May 29, and posted on her official X handle, saying the NDC would not hold primaries for the FCT senate position, effectively ending her ambition to contest for the seat in the 2027 general election.
She added that the party, however, intends to conduct a primary election for candidates contesting for House of Representatives seats.
“Our party has decided not to conduct primaries for the Senatorial seat in FCT Abuja. It, however, intends to conduct primaries for House of Representatives! Go ahead and make your choice known!” she said.
Yesufu urged her supporters to remain calm and maintain focus on the broader political objective: the 2027 presidential election.
She said, “I urge each and every one of you to remain calm and focus on the bigger picture, which is the presidential election. Nigeria will be OK!”
The activist also appreciated supporters of the #AishaForSenate project for their commitment and dedication.
She also pledged to continue engaging residents across the FCT, saying she would return to all six area councils in the coming week to appreciate residents for their support and continue advocating for a better capital city.
“I appreciate all your support, dedication and commitment towards #AishaForSenate project.
“In the coming week, I will be returning back to all the 6 Area Councils God willing to appreciate them for the warm welcome and continue to forge ahead for a #BetterFCT,” she added.
Yesufu had declared interest in the 2027 FCT senatorial race on May 6 after joining the NDC from the African Democratic Congress (ADC), saying her decision was influenced by the leadership experience she gained in the party.
Her withdrawal comes amid recent speculation that the party had ceded the FCT senate ticket to Amanda Pam, an aspirant who had been in the party before Yesufu’s defection. However, the NDC has yet to officially comment on the claims.
