A video showing an Islamic cleric carrying what appears to be a pump-action firearm while walking alongside members of his congregation has sparked concern online amid renewed bandit attacks in Sokoto State.
The footage, shared on X by an account identified as D English Alhaji Media on Monday, August 24, 2026, shows the cleric, dressed in Islamic attire, carrying the firearm as he moves with worshippers.
The identity of the cleric and the exact location where the video was recorded could not be independently verified.
The footage emerged amid worsening insecurity across rural communities in Sokoto, where banditry and kidnapping have continued to threaten residents.
The development has raised questions about whether the deteriorating security situation is compelling some residents, including religious leaders, to carry firearms for protection.
The video surfaced shortly after armed bandits reportedly attacked Dinawa, Munƙi and Gidan Dare in Wurno Local Government Area, killing at least five people and abducting several others.
Community sources said the attackers exploited heavy rainfall to invade the communities at night while residents remained indoors.
A source said the assault on Dinawa began around 10:30pm, with the attackers reportedly moving from house to house, stealing valuables and destroying property.
Another source confirmed the deaths and said the number of abducted residents remained uncertain as families searched for missing relatives.
The attackers were also reportedly involved in cattle rustling and the theft of valuables.
The recurring attacks have heightened fear across Sokoto’s rural communities.
Against this backdrop, the viral footage has renewed debate over insecurity and the growing pressure on communities to protect themselves.
However, the cleric’s identity, location, motive and the legality of the firearm remain unverified.
