Bandits on Sunday evening attacked a town in Katsina State, killing a member of the state’s Community Watch Corps and injuring another while they attempted to repel them.
The bandits, who came on motorcycles through Marabar, attacked Dangani town in Musawa Local Government Area of the state, around 5:30 p.m.
As they stormed the town, members of the targeted members of the state’s Community Watch Corps stationed there engaged them in a gun duel.
However, during the encounter, they killed one officer, whose name was given as Anas Ayuba and went away with his rifle. They also injured another officer of the corps, known simply as Nura, who is currently receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital.
A source close to the town told Impact Nigeria News Online on Monday morning that the bandits attacked the town after giving residents deadline to pay a levy imposed on them, as the residents were said to have earlier held a meeting where they agreed not to pay the levy.
They were said to have refused to pay because the state government drafted the Community Watch Corps to give them adequate protection in the town.
However, according to the source, as the bandits arrived the town, the corps engaged them in gun duel for more than 45 minutes before the bandits retreated after shooting the officer dead and injuring the other member of the corps.
The Northern part of the country, especially the North-West, has been under the grips of bandits and terrorists who unleash mayhem on residents of various communities, killing people and abducting others.
