A police officer has demonstrated a rare honesty as he has returned the sum of N2.6 million credited to his bank account by mistake and his deed is already receiving applause from Nigerians.
The officer, Muhammed Alhaji Muhammed, attached to the Borno State Police Command, was said to have got a credit alert in his United Bank for Africa (UBA) account on his phone and on checking it, he found the sum of N2.6 million there.
He became confused as he was not expecting such an amount from anyone. He decided to visit the bank to report the alert he received.
At the bank, the money was found to have been sent by a user of Moniepoint and the person was contacted through his phone number since the phone number is also the account number used to send the money.
According to the Public Relations Officer of the Borno State Police Command, Kenneth Daso, who narrated the matter, the person who sent the money in error, who was also disturbed, raced to the bank after he was called and met the police officer. He was said to have been extremely glad when he was told that he sent the money in error to the account of the officer.
The money was eventually returned to the owner and despite efforts by the man to offer the officer some money for his honesty, Officer Muhammed refused, as he only exchanged a handshake with him.
According to the Police PRO, the command has praised the honesty displayed by the officer and the Commissioner of Police is expected to speak on his conduct soon.
