A policeman who was said to have pulled the trigger of his gun and shot at the tyre of a car at a checkpoint in Delta State over the refusal of the owner to pay bribe has been identified, detained and he is to face orderly room trial.
This was disclosed by the Public Relations Officer of the Delta State Police Command, Bright Edafe, while responding to various comments after the video of the incident went viral.
According to reports, the incident occurred in front of Toscana Hotel along Okpanam Road in Asaba, the state capital, where a police patrol team mounted a checkpoint at night.
It was gathered that when the said policeman, whose name was not disclosed, flagged down the driver of the vehicle, he conducted a search and after he did not find anything incriminating, he allegedly requested for money from the motorist.
The owner of the car was said to have refused bluntly and an argument ensued. In the course of the argument and while the motorist was driving away, the policeman reportedly cocked his gun and shot at one of the vehicle’s tyres.
Apparently, following the posting of the video on the X platform, the command ordered and investigation into the incident. The officer was later identified, detained and he is the face orderly room trial.
Writing on the matter, Edafe said: “In all honesty, this is embarrassing, shameful, careless, so unprofessional and not justified at all. The policeman has been identified, detained and will appear before the CP today.”
