Some bandits who barricaded a highway in Zamfara State have killed a soldier who was on his way to his duty post.

The bandits killed the soldier, Abdulwahab Lawal, a Private, on Monday evening while he was coming from Malumfashi in Katsina State and heading to his duty post in Zamfara State.

The marauders were said to have barricaded the Katsina-Zamfara Expressway, attacking travellers. On sighting the soldier in his uniform inside a vehicle, they reportedly shot him, killing him on the spot.

The Katsina-Zamfara Expressway is a key infrastructure project in the North-West, forming part of the broader Zaria-Funtua-Sokoto road dualisation. The road is a vital link connecting Kaduna, Katsina, Zamfara, and Sokoto states.

A competent source told Impact Nigeria News Online on Monday night that the attackers were believed to be bandits operating on various mountains in the state who used to come out in the evening and night to attack and abduct motorists and travellers.

It was also gathered that his family members confirmed the death after his remains were evacuated by his colleagues from the scene of the incident, just as the source said funeral prayers would be conducted by the Nigerian Army authorities in line with Islamic rites on Tuesday.
